Ibex and more
Once the last of the day tourists have left the Gornergrat, peace and quiet returns. Then, the high-mountain wildlife appears. You will almost certainly see ibex, jackdaws, marmots, mountain hares, chamois and eagles.
Hike in & out
There are plenty of ways of expending energy in the fresh, clean Zermatt mountain air: hiking, climbing and mountaineering, mountain biking, skiing or playing golf – but there is also the option of doing nothing, and simply enjoying summer in the Zermatt mountains from the terrace at the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat.
There are not many places in Switzerland where even the Swiss must have a souvenir to take home. The Gronergrat is such a place. In the shop on the summit, you will find everything your heart desires. After all, every explorer needs a keepsake to take home.
Full moon and the Matterhorn = sleepless in the mountains
If the mountainscape is jaw-dropping by day, it is even more impressive in the light of a full moon. Snowy peaks and glaciers in the silvery light of the moon become aglow and brighter than anything you have ever seen. A tip that is, unfortunately, not exactly unknown. Therefore, after taking a look at the lunar calendar, make sure to reserve early enough. By the way: one or two days prior to and following a full moon the view is almost as good. In winter, those who do not have enough time to stay overnight can book the “Moonlit fascination” package.
Peaceful and charming
Before breakfast, make a short detour to the panorama terrace right behind the hotel. After the short ascent, you will feel like you climbed a four-thousander yourself. Not just because of the thin air, but above all because of the stunning view. Anyone who has ever seen the sun rise from up here will never forget this moment.
Long or rapid
Before your visit to the Gornergrat, you should carefully read your camera’s user manual once again. It is worth trying out two features up here: the time exposure and time lapse features. The stars up here are staggeringly close and the coldness of the night ensures a sharper image with no noise.
Snowshoe trek to the Rotenboden
There is probably no older way of moving forward in snow than using snowshoes. Your own breathing and the crunching of snow beneath your snowshoes will be the only sounds that you will hear. There is a snowshoe expedition starting at the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat, which is easy to manage without a guide.
Pine wood – good for the heart
The Swiss pine, also known as the Arolla pine, is one of the trees native to the Alps. Scientific studies have proven that its wood has positive effects on a person’s circulation and sleep. Swiss pines can grow to be up to 1,000 years old. The rooms at the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat feature a considerable amount of Swiss pine, which is another reason why guests find it so relaxing here..
Four-thousanders all around
What use is it to have the most beautiful panoramic view of mountains that you do not even know the names of? From the Gornergrat, there is an unobstructed view of 29 mountain peaks reaching an altitude of at least 4000 metres. You could do a little brain training on your holiday and learn all the names by heart. There is an app for that too. Those less interested in technology can simply go and check them out on the panorama terrace.
There are few places on earth where a selfie is as fitting as here on the peak of the Gornergrat. There are actually two places here for a selfie. The peak with the incredible panorama behind it and the blue wall at 3,100 metres above sea level at the Kulmhotel Gornergrat featuring the huge “3100” figures.
